Documenting space
Space + Fortitude
Greetings, Earthlings. I’m pleased to note a flurry of new subscribers to Space+ recently, and so I thought I’d take the opportunity to quickly say hello.
There will be more substantial posts from me in the new year, but please revisit the interviews I’ve already posted here so far, as they are still very relevant and offer fascinating insight into the sector. Here are the direct links:
Rachel Lyons - sent citizen astronauts to space through Space For Humanity
Moriba Jah - space environmentalist championing a circular space economy
Frank White - documenter of the ‘overview effect’ all astronauts experience
Alex Milas - bringing space down to Earth for the public through Space Rocks
Rod Pyle - space historian tracking major shifts taking place across the sector
Sahba El-Shawa - championing a more honest and peaceful use of space for all
In between these are a few other written posts by me, and well as a recap of what I’ve learned so far.
But what I actually wanted to focus on today is what other people have to say about space.
Here are three documentaries I’d like to bring your attention to:
Fortitude
For anyone who can make it on 2 December, there is a free showing of Fortitude taking place at the Glasgow Science Centre, complete with a panel discussion from industry leaders beforehand. It’s a great primer, so come along and spread the word among anyone with a curiosity about space:

Once Upon A Time In Space
For those with access to BBC or PBS, this new five-part series just dropped last week, and details what happened as the space race between the USA and the Soviet Union (later Russia) turned into an uneasy but ultimately fruitful collaboration, and how we got to the engineering and geopolitical marvel that is the International Space Station. Well worth your time.
Wild Wild Space
In some ways, a great companion piece to Fortitude - taking a different approach stylistically but covering similar territory to round out a view of what is happening in the space sector right now. Streaming on various platforms.
There will be plenty more recommendations from me in future posts, so make sure you’re subscribed. And for those who can be there in person, I’ll see you in Glasgow in December 🧑🚀
